Still place in the young adults group this July-August for immersion travel 🙌🔥!!
Join for two weeks or the full six weeks. Also looking for Ecuadorian youngsters to join in the international group 🤙!
What does this look like practically?
*For 4 half days a week, we take you along and you help us out.
*Help in daily life, from making empanadas and cleaning swordfish, to filling the water well, keeping the river free of plastic, and guiding children
*Learn local skills such as making artesanías, searching for octopus, and cutting bamboo with a machete
*Discover the wisdom of community life, and open your mind through campfires and intercultural connection, sleep with a fisher family
*English–Spanish exchange
*Live on deserted beaches, see whales every day, and explore the tropical forest of Ecuador
*You get taken along fútbol, surf, kitesurf, yoga, bonfires..
The rest of the time is free to fill in yourself.
You contribute as a coliver for accommodation and food. The contribution also helps to make projects possible that work towards a more free, fair and sustainable community (like the Niños Libres, Ocean Connection, and other initiatives).

A few relaxed days in Punta La Barca, Ecuador. Sunsets every night that the photos just can’t quite capture.
Lots of time in the ocean. Liliana turned 6, which she celebrated with new friends ☺️🌊✨ #TogetherElsewhere #PuntaLaBarca #ecuador #FamilyTravel #worldschooling
Why is Punta la Barca
I can tell you what is Punta la Barca. It’s a coliving, where different cultures and generations meet each other in an authentic way. It’s a wonderful place at the ecuadorean coast where you can see the whales jump every day and surf on deserted beaches. It’s a project that is run by our fisher-farmer family -people that know how to live with little finances, know how to live communally, and have the heart in the right place.
But more interesting than what is Punta la Barca.. is why is Punta la Barca.
And that is because we believe in a different world. A world where rich and poor grow towards each other. Where we can connect authentically beyond cultures. We believe in working together.. Because in the end, we all want the same. Free, fair, sustainable. Nothing better than going after that goal together. A world created step by step, starting right here right now, with what there is and what there isn’t. That’s what we believe in. That 's what we do.
And that’s what we do together with you, traveler, friend ❤️. Come as a family, join the Niños Libres. Come as a remote worker, come as a surfer, or come just to feel what I'm talking about. Come to do a travel immersion, where we take you along while you help us four half days a week.
This July-August we organize a small group of adventurous open-minded +-18 year olds from all over, to experience and create together in a travel immersion. Info session on 16th of march online, send me a message to join!
Big hug ❤️🤙🔥
Families here with older teenagers or young adults, around 18 years old.. this one is for you 🤙🔥
With Punta La Barca, we are organizing a 6-week immersion travel this July–August. Something truly special, if I may say so myself.. 🤗❤️
Expect a small group of international, Ecuadorian, and Belgian (my nationality) young people. They help alongside us 4 half days per week (daily community life, making empanadas, guiding children, English–Spanish language exchange, maintaining the food forest, the Punta La Barca project, animals, building, keeping the fire going..). The rest of the time is free for them to fill in themselves (chilling at the beach, kite/surfing, learning Spanish, exploring together, whale watching, studying online, playing football with the fishermen, yoga..).
It’s an experience that goes far beyond “just traveling.” It’s freedom in its purest form, and collaborating within a culture that breathes community. And feeling that across all those cultures, nationalities, and social classes, we are simply connected in the shared act of building something meaningful together.
It is also the ideal environment for young people to step away from their usual routine, slow down, and allow themselves to be inspired.
Some words from young people who joined last year:
“I lived together with people who carry stories and experiences that school or work could never teach. Staying at Punta La Barca was fantastic. I learned, experienced, and discovered so much.” – Mona, 18 years old
“A moment I will never forget is little 2-year-old Alecito who wanted to draw every day. And the whales jumping out of the water. What I miss most about Ecuador is the peace and the view.” - Isaac, 17 years old
Interested? I’m hosting an online info session on March 16th — you’re very welcome! Send me a message through WhatsApp on 0032468072294.
And if you happen to know someone in your friends or family group for who this is made.. so much thanks to help spread this initiative 🙏🤗
How can you join Punta la Barca?
*as a coliver: you have your own room or house, shared spaces, breakfast, monday-thursday shared dinners, and coworking space
*as a local family in the niños libres: kids join the niños libres program monday-thursday in the morning, friday in the afternoon; adults use the coworking space
*as a coliving family: the wonderful combination of coliver + niños libres
*as an immersion-coliver: coliver + plus you work together with locals for 3h a day

Punta la Barca is like a home away from home, a community you didn’t know you needed. In the two months that I stayed there, Inge, Juan, their children, Micho, Ana, Nexar and the entire family became like my own. This place will hold a special place in my heart forever. Thank you for everything ❤️

This is a wonderful place. Friendly people, simple living, surrounded by nature, a quiet beach. It is not very touristy and feels authentic. It is a great place to work from because it has co-working spaces and fast wifi. I would visit again and recommend to anyone who is looking to get away and spend time in a peaceful place. I’m really grateful I got to stay here. Its nice to see that places like Punta La Barca exist in the world.

My husband, our six year old daughter, and I stayed at Punta La Barca for almost one month. What really sets this hostel apart from others is the community feeling of this place. We got to know many members of Juan's family while we were there. His mother, Ana, make breakfasts, and she even taught me how to make a few dishes as I love cooking.
Inge is one of these people that really likes meeting people and getting to know them and make them feel comfortable. We connected easily and it was a joy to have the hosts and other hostel guests around to interact with and do activities together.
It is easy to get fresh fruits and vegetables, as there are trucks that come by every day selling them right outside your door. A short walk to a tienda in the village supplies all of the other necessities for cooking. If you want a specialty item (like rice/almond milk, or nut butters) you can find them at the big mall in Manta (a 30 minute drive away).
The beach is a short walk away which is nice for swimming, boogie boarding, or surfing. The kite surf school is a 40 minute walk away. While we were there if the wind was just right we were able to catch a ride with someone else from the hostel who was going there to kite surf.
The Internet is fast. There are cell phone towers nearby. During the rainy season (starts in January) it is common to loose power for an hour or so when it rains. You can create a hot spot using your cell phone if you are working from there and need to stay connected while the power is out. They do have back up internet too.
This is a great place to slow down, enjoy community, and the safe, quiet feeling of Santa Marianita. We just left and are already hoping to return again sometime this next year.

I stayed for two weeks and liked it a lot. The shower is very warm. The view is amazing, you really can see the Wales there. I was even lucky enough to see some dolphins. Even though it was in August (cloudy season) I had around 4 to 5 sunny days per week. I can recommend it and would come again.

This place is awesome. It is right on the beach, while I was here I saw whales almost everyday, the internet is great, and Inge and Juan are awesome. I really can’t recommend this place enough. It is the perfect place to relax. The town is a bit small but it has the basics. Also you can take kite surfing lessons and you aren’t too far from two national parks. I had an amazing time.

What an amazing week with Inga, Juan and there two little boys. This is more like staying with a big family of guests and friends all eating together and playing volleyball most nights.||If you are after a cheap and cheerful hostel with some private rooms and dorms + good WiFi and kitchen facilities - this place is a must.||If you normally stay in fancy hotels and guesthouses and have higher expectations than we do - do not choose Punta La Barca.||Look at the pictures and the Facebook group for it and see if it is your kind of travel experience.

Punta la Barca is beautifully situated at the southern end of Santa Mariañita. It is located on a hill, so you have a great view over the sea and the village. The rooms are very clean, equipped with mosquito nets and comfortable. On the first floor they have a well-equipped communal kitchen and plenty of room to rest or work. The owners Inge and Juan are very open, friendly, helpful and always available for questions. I really enjoyed the time theret - whether relaxing on the private beach or chatting with them. Thank you, you created an awesome place!

I stayed at the hostel Punta la Barca for a while (2 months). It is such a great place to relax and to find to yourself. There are barely any tourists which make the 8km long beach even longer and bigger :). As promised: it was windy almost every day. I was kitesurfing a lot. ||The owners of the hostel Juan, a local, and his Belgium girlfriend are so relaxed and love to hang out with all the travelers. Bonfire, beach tennis... there was always something to do. Santa Marianita is no party place. If you liked chilled vibes without the drugs people offer in montanita you will find a place you love!

I had a really nice time staying at this Hostel. Juan and Ingrid are really inviting and very welcoming. Besides, the views from here are fantastic.||||I would totally recommend this to anyone who likes to be a bit off the beaten track.

Rooms in this little hostal are rustic, but cozy. The hostal sits atop of a hill just above the beach, and from the balcony on the first floor, you have a perfect view. Pelicans are passing by - it's a perfect place to relax. It's a 30 min walk to the touristic part of Santa Marianita ("Playa Bonita") with all the kitesurfing activities and small eateries along the beach.Alternatively, walk along the main road through town, it's also half an hour. For USD 5.-, you can get a fresh meal (fish) at the cabana. Breakfast is included. Pick-up from Manta Airport is provided upon request at a low fare. They also sell cold drinks. The only downside is, it can be very noisy when all the rooms are rent.
