The accommodation is one of the better ones in Kiwenga. The staff is very friendly and helpful and tries to do everything possible for the guests. I would improve the following points: 1) A selection of jams at breakfast would be nice, even though the mango puree is great. 2) A backup generator is needed. We had no power almost every other day and night, which made sleeping unpleasant. 3) The locals naturally share the beach with the guests, and sometimes even the sun loungers in front of the apartments... this is a bit unpleasant when you have to shoo the local children away. Peace and quiet are also not guaranteed, as school groups frequently arrive, swim, and play on the beach. The direct beachfront location is a plus. Now, regarding Zanzibar in general: We have rarely experienced such a dysfunctional country, where even less works than in Germany. The locals are often pushy; everyone wants your money and to sell you something. A simple "no" is often not enough of an answer, and sometimes you have to be forceful and loud to stop being harassed. Most of the time, you're even followed. This unfortunately completely ruined our holiday. The scenery is beautiful, but the country is utterly filthy. There's trash and plastic everywhere, and people are burning it. People live in slums. Many try to work their way up, cooking for tourists and trying to make something of their lives. These people are truly friendly and deserve our respect and appreciation. However, just as many laze around on the streets doing absolutely nothing. We wouldn't recommend Zanzibar for a holiday. It's expensive there, and the quality is poor. In Thailand and other countries, especially islands, you get more for your money, and the people are much nicer. We never felt truly safe when we were out and about; I've never experienced anything like it in the world. Sadly. If that doesn't deter you, then at least you'll be well looked after and accommodated at Surfescape.
