When I decided to relocate to Himachal, I stayed for a month in Ghoomakad, before finding a place for long term stay. It was good decision for the following reasons: 1. Good Internet Ghoomakad has good internet service, with power back up. This ensured that my online work continues smoothly. 2. Great Location Ghoomakad is very centrally located while being close to nature. There is easy access to for shops, cafes and even gym. 3. Rustic Feel Ghoomakad has mud houses, which give the room a rustic and minimal feel. Coming from the city, I enjoyed the basic feel of the room. Overall, my stay was pleasant and peaceful. Ghoomakad is a good place for people looking for a budget, no frills accomodation with good internet.

Ghoomakad review Recently I finished my 8 months stay Ghoomakad. This was my second long stay here in 3 years. If you are someone with online work, looking for a long stay in mountains, at an affordable budget, then Ghoomakad is a go to destination. Here are the pros and cons of this place in brief: Pros: This place has cozy mud-houses. The earthy feel inside the rooms feel so good to me. The host is very kind and warm. Mohinder ji and family are very humble and not business oriented, so you get a nice experience. The coworking space has amazing peaceful vibes. It’s very spacious and comfortable. Just in nearby there’s a big park and ground to hang around anytime. The neighborhood is lovely. Peaceful, relaxed vibes. The Wifi service is amazing. In the coworking spaces, the power back and wifi arrangements are wonderful. I never had issues of power cut in the office space. There’s a community kitchen which has all the basic utensils, refrigerator and gas stove. Throughout our stay we cooked food there. This kitchen makes your stay more healthy and affordable. If you don’t want to cook then there’s an in-house Rasoi Dhaba which provides all day meal. Every bathroom has geyser for hot water. Enough blankets are provided. There’s a gym at 500m from the place. Zomato, Swiggy is serviceable till 10:30 pm Online orders drom Amazon, Flipkart or any site reach here easily. Cons: As this is not a business motivated space, there is no room service, it’s a self served place. Hosts take care of the rooms regularly. You have to keep your expectations regarding customer service very low. The concept of this place is different, that you have to understand and adapt to. There’s no service staff for guests. You have to manage few things yourself. And request owner whenever needed. Being a village, all the nearby shops close till 9:30 pm. For long stays, if you want a cook then it’s difficult to find one. If you don’t know cooking or don’t want to cook or lack time time to cook, then relying on Rasoi Dhaba for daily food would be tough in my opinion. Managing daily healthy meals can be challenging. Although Rasoi staffs are very friendly, they can try to cook however you ask. No online cab service available like Ola, Uber, Rapido, etc. You can keep contact of local taxi driver for urgent needs. Lack of public transportation from the place. 2km down the road, there is market on the sides of Palampur road. There you can find buses for most places. It rains a lot throughout the year at this place being a hill station. If you don’t like rains much then this may trouble you a bit. This might not be the cheapest option for staying. But the combination of coworking space and the nice campus is not available at other places. Food in nearby restaurants are relatively expensive.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS Read their TripAdvisor reviews for several people’s bad experiences. I almost lost trust in humanity (seriously I thought Himachal is filled with rudes and frauds) by the way I was treated by these guys. Fortunately Dharamshala (not rakkar and ghoomakkad) people were very very nice who saved the day. Later I realised this place is just hyped due to marketing (probably paid) and seriously no where it. There are 100 times better places in Main Dharamshala wiith better view, much better internet and very nice people. Do not go by purchased hype. My extremely worse experience below - 1. Owner is never there. He has leased restaurant to some other people. No attention. Property has no concept of service or attention. 2. Internet is poor. Main Dharamshala stays have Jio Fibre with more than 100 MBPS connection. This place barely has 20-30MBPS. That also keeps going and coming. Why ? Read 1st point. 3. Very remote and No transport. Be ready to heckled by goon like people they refer (it’s his friend). He totally denied when I said it look’s expensive ( i said politely). I even agreed to his price. This after coming 30 minutes later of calling (he stays very nearby). I had to literally walk 3kms to main town. In between no other taxi service is available. No ola/uber/rapido as of now here. 4. Construction workers drink and misbehave. I had to smell liquor while having my dinner. It’s not a bar otherwise it was okay. 5. Very small rooms at same price of AirBnBs with no facility. 6. No service attitude. Only take money in advance. And no refunds of you leave early. Even when almost all place is empty.

I lived in Ghoomakad for two months and there is no better host than Mohinder ji who goes out of his way to ensure a pleasant experience especially with the Rice Beer :-). The whole environment is setup in a way to encourage interaction and collaboration. I met so many wonderful souls in tech & non tech from different parts of the world. There are a lot more things that made this place special for me. Ghoomakad Rasoi - run by Ravinder ji has been more than a place to eat delicious fresh, healthy food. I honestly felt like I was part of their community and even got invited to a couple of religious gathering where I got a chance to taste the traditional "Dham". Ravinder ji was also kind enough to drop me back to Dharamshala in his bike. A special 'shout out' for that gesture. Coworking space - a very cosy mud house with comfortable seating & desk space. I shared many wonderful moments with Ram, Pankaj & team from Tech Himalayas. Thank you guys for welcoming me with such warmth & taking me to watch the Avengers movie. Surrounding - you will hear water stream wherever you are which runs through, over & around Ghoomakad. It's like a water palace. I woke up every morning to the sight of the mighty Dhaluladhar right outside my window. It was blissful. Trust me. No better way to wake up. Places nearby - a few minutes walk up the road gets you to "The Bridge" where you can spend hours listening to the river song. There is also "The rock" & "The Cliff" for breathtaking sunsets. Dharamshala is also 6-7 kms away. There is plenty of places to check out like Kharota viewpoint, aghanjar Mahadev temple, Gyuto monastry, the river bed...I could go on & on really. So. I hope you have found enough reasons to vist Ghoomakad. Do mention my name & get a special discount on booking & food. Thank you Mr Ghoomakad aka Mohinder ji & team for all the love, kindness & affection. I am eternally grateful to each one of you. P.S : Ghoomakad is not a hotel so if you are a spoilt city brat who expects room service, order people around just bcoz you have paid for the room and crib about every little thing that didn't meet your fancy globetrotter standards then Ghoomakad is not for you. Go find some star rated place where you can chitchat with your own shadow about how GOT ending sucked.

The only reason this place gets even two stars is because the view is pretty, flowing water sounds around, the large room and the host did his best to comfort me. His family was really sweet too. I stayed here for a month with the purpose of working remotely. Since it was a co-working space, internet was a necessity. He told me he tried various things and nothing worked so I must go buy a pocket WiFi for about 2k. I texted him quite a few times before arriving here with my questions and he didn't reply to them. When I called him, sometimes he was dismissive about them. The host told me he filters the crowd. Well I didn't see it happening at all. There were young people playing loud music, drinking and smoking in the common area. Before coming I had clarified about the smoking spaces, he said only outdoor. But people were smoking even inside the restaurant and I had to go out mid meals. The prices aren't even fixed at the restaurant so make sure to check carefully. The doors are so noisy that people bang them all the time, even in the middle of the night when they arrive. People are talking loudly in the middle of the night and the sounds make it to your bed. Certain rooms are even connected to the neighbours toilets which means you can see the light, hear private sounds and if the water leaks it comes all the way into your room. The community kitchen is so tiny with barely any utensils. As much as they stress on sustainability, there's bottled water and chips in plastic packaging being sold at the restaurant. It was interesting that for an extension of 3 days he wanted to charge me almost twice of my per day rate. The rent of this place and the contribution for the common kitchen were over the top. My stay there defied the whole purpose of improving my sleep, working efficiently, Having continuous internet and breathing fresh air. I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

We stayed in Ghoomakad for a night, in the last week of Oct 2018. The place is really nice, in Rakkar village, close to Norbulinka University in Dharamsala ( though separared by a small stream ). You can see the Dauladhar range of mountains from the home. The property essentially has 3 2 storey buildings. The owner Mahinder and his family stay in the first floor of the central building. The rest have dorms and rooms with a communal kitchen in the third one. The rooms are clean and neat with an attached bath. The bed basic and comfortable, the linen clean. There are enough eateries close by , though most of them are Veg / Non Veg dhabas. We found a small college canteen nearby who serves only vegetarian food. There are small provision stores close by who can rustle up a maggi and tea for you. If you wish, you can buy provisions and cook in the communal kitchen too ( there is a basic charge of Rs 200/- per day to use the kitchen ). Reaching the place is easier if you have your own vehicle. Else you have to walk up the last 1.5kms ( uphill ) from the main road. There are infrequent buses on the Norbulinka road. If you manage to get one, then the distance to walk will be only about 500mts but dont wait for these are they are really infrequent. The place is really calm and serene. The air clean and there is very little noise on the road. A perfect place to hang out and recharge your batteries. Mahinder runs his own NGO, Nishta near Ghoomakad. This NGO runs a community center with a library for all ages, computer training center .. They also work with single women in the surrounding villages. Waste disposal and processing is also being done by Nishta. If you have the time and inclination, please do visit this place. ( just down the road ).

Mountain call answered – a Dhauladhar story||||Teen years can sometimes be overwhelming. It was during this time – I would have been in class 9 or 10 (around 1999-2000) – when the thought of staying in the mountains gripped me. I am not quite sure what sowed the seeds of mountains in me. Most probably it was the book Bara Pani by Lila Majumdar. The story set in a mountain village seeped in my blood and ever since I have longed to spend quality time in the mountains.||||Fast forward to 2018, I took a sabbatical from work and answered the call of the mountains. I went to Rakkar, a quite village near Dharamshala, and lived in a tree house for about 5 weeks – starting Feb to first week of March. ||||Where to stay?||||In Rakkar, I stumbled across a place called Ghoomakad. It is a co-working/co-living place in Rakkar with the concept of green/sustainable tourism applied to maximum. Organic waste is segregated and used to make compost which is used for in-house organic farming. Ghoomakad offers plenty of choices in accommodation – mud houses, tents, hostels and a tree house. Don’t get eschewed by the name of a madhouse. The build brings in the best of modern and rural construction techniques. It is well equipped, furnished and the best thing is that it remains warm in winter and cool in summer. My favorite though is the lone tree house in the field. It has a small roof window. This ensures that every nighttime you stare out of it, a star greets you. If lucky, a moon will see you too. A brook runs near it so the sound of water is ever present. Add to it the bird songs of bulbuls, totas, mainas, etc. and the view of Dhauladhar Mountains – you would have decided to settle down in the Himalayas.||Ghoomakad offers a working space replete with high speed internet, projector and printer. So if you are a digital nomad inclined to see the mountains, this is the place for you. When you come to this place, have a chat with its founder – Mohinder Sharma. Once a shepherd, he has spent over 10 years developing this place by his bare hands. It is amazing to see what a pair of hands can achieve.||||Cost?||||Rent range is from 300-1500 INR per day depending upon the accommodation. Rent increases from tent, hostel, tree-house and to madhouse. The longer you stay, the lesser the rent is. I stayed in a tree house and for that I paid 5000/- for a month. It is on sharing basis but luckily no one turned up and I had the entire tree house for myself. For food (4 meals a day), I paid 4000/- for 1 month. So total cost for me was 9000/-.||||Accessibility and Food||||Rakkar is easily accessible from Dharamshala - about 7 kms. Here are the different ways you can reach Ghoomakad/Rakkar from Dharamshala bus stand.||||1) Sidhbari – from the bus stand take a local bus for Sidhbari. It will cost about 5/- and 20 mins. Rakkar/Ghoomakad from Sidhbari is about 1.5 kms. So, if you don’t have much luggage then you can you can walk too. Else, take a lift (people are very helpful) or hire a car (about 100/-).||2) Bus stand – Hire a car directly. It will cost 250-300/-||Road to and in Rakkar is well paved. Mobile connectivity is excellent too. If you want 4G then Airtel and Jio are good options. Vodafone is 2G in Rakkar. ||||Food is offered in the community kitchen of Ghoomakad. Pidu bhai and Guddi didi make every effort for the food to be tasty. You are also free to use the kitchen and prepare what you want to. There is also an alternative at Ghoomakad-Gokul Rasoi. Ghoomakad has collaborated with Gokul Chaat & Misthaan to offer and promote local food. Gokul Chaat is a new vendor of sweets in Sidhbari and though it is just 2 years old it is giving stiff competition to shops that are decades old. Every Sunday Ghoomakad-Gokul Rasoi organizes Kangri-Dham and only local food is served. ||||What to do?||||You can laze around all day, go for walks in the forests and mountains or choose to climb/traverse them. There is no dearth of options. For souls in search of peace, there is a Buddhist monastery in Yol, close to Sidhbari. There are meditation and yoga centers in Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. For adrenaline seekers there is paragliding in Dharamshala and a multitude of trekking/mountaineering options. You can spend a night at Saloti Mata Mandir. Why? The temple is perched on a hill and offers breathtaking view of sunset and of the entire valley.
