The beginning of Semana Santa in La Orotava 🙏
Over the next days, you’ll see processions like this all across Tenerife — a tradition deeply rooted in culture, history and community.
The celebrations build up throughout the week, with the main processions taking place on Good Friday.
Whether you’re here for the culture, the atmosphere or simply to experience something different — Semana Santa is a special time on the island.
Staying at Gato Azul means being right in the middle of local traditions like this 💙🕯️
Are you on Tenerife this week? Will you experience Semana Santa with us?

Have you ever been to Teide National Park? 🌋
Just about an hour away from the coast, the landscape completely changes — from green valleys to volcanic lava fields, red and black rocks and wide open spaces that feel almost unreal.
It’s no surprise that this area is often used as a filming location for “Mars-like” scenes. The altitude, the dry climate and the volcanic terrain create a landscape that feels more like another planet than an island.
Whether you go for a short stop, a hike or simply to take in the views, Teide is one of those places you shouldn’t miss while staying in Tenerife.
And the best part?
It’s the kind of spontaneous adventure you can easily do during your stay at Gato Azul 💙
Save this for your next Tenerife trip — or come explore it with us 🥾

Throwback to our first rooftop Community Dinner of the season ✨
One of our guests, Matouš, decided to take over the kitchen together with his girlfriend and cook for everyone. The result: a delicious vegan paella, with different toppings (including shrimp for those who wanted), served with a fresh salad.
We shared the meal together up on the rooftop, watching the evening slowly turn into night. It was a little chilly, but that just meant everyone grabbed a blanket and got a little closer around the table.
Moments like these are what community at Gato Azul is all about 💙
Thanks for cooking for all of us, Matouš!

While many people spent the last Sunday at the beach, we headed up into the forests of Aguamansa instead 🌲
Cool mountain air, pine forests and trails that were sometimes a little more adventurous than expected (thanks to some construction along the way 😅).
But that’s part of the fun — exploring together, getting a little sweaty and ending the hike tired but happy.
Just another Sunday adventure with the Gato Azul crew 💙

Gato Azul is a truly living, long-standing home! I spent 2 weeks there (far too short!).
The place feels warm and homely. Wherever you look, you stumble upon little rays of beauty — in the crooked barrel on the porch, the carved dresser, the checkered tiles. You can relax in the garden, catch the sun with a coffee on the rooftop, stay up late talking with wonderful ppl.
And La Orotava itself is one of the most beautiful towns on the island. After a full day of hiking, you can wander through charming streets without the overwhelming tourist noise.
Beyond the beauty, there’s also a comfortable workspace, excellent organization, and Sonja, who took care of us, is incredibly helpful.
I truly hope to visit Gato Azul again!

Tricky in winter. Town can be wet and chilly. The windows on my room were ANCIENT: simple wood, single pane glass, with a >1cm open gap =all cold air & street noise comes in. Thermometer read 15°C inside. Common areas also chilly and damp, which hurts the vibe. I'm sure the place is much better from Apr to Nov.
This was Jan 2026. Hopefully they fix the windows before next winter.

A beautiful and comfortable home from home. I really enjoyed my stay and my house mates. Sonia the manager gave a friendly welcome.
La Orotava is a good base too. A nice town with easy access to the rest of the island.

Very cool old house with interesting nooks an decor. Loved the roofdeck and the back garden area and the location is great basecamp for bicycling Teide as I was training for a tour of Fuerteventura and being in central Orotava was a treat. What made it really stand out was the friendliness and quality of the people. It was mostly a self-directed co-working experience which worked fine as conversations led to spontaneous adventures like renting motorcycles and riding up and climbing Teide @ 1:30 in the morning! Epic. The house stays cool so I will make sure to bring my own slippers next time. The Sauna is a really nice feature. Was never really crowded while I was there if anything there were fewer people working that I expected but I also worked less that I thought I would as there is so much to do on the island. The roofdeck shaded work table was a great feature - pretty much perfect. Realistically, though the hard part was saying bye to the people I met.

We had a wonderful stay at Gato Azul during Christmas time. As our airbnb was cancelled on the day we left home, we were very happy that we found Gato Azul. Ingolf quickly offered us a double room with an en-suite bathroom.
The town - La Orotava - is really cute, authentic and a great place for trips around the island.
A huge plus was our community manager. Her warm and welcoming attitude really made us feel comfy. She even offered yoga sessions on the rooftop - Amazing. Plus she organized special get togethers throughout the Christmas days.
We had luck with the people who were there this week, as we had a great group dynamic and could spend a great time together.
Con:
- the room and bathroom weren't cleaned during the week, this would have been nice.
- Some of the guests were really messy in the kitchen, to an extent where the kitchen was not clean enough to be used by anyone.

The hostel is very very nice. I „had“ to stay here twice because of an unfortunate personal situation, but it was very good.
I especially like how cool the building is. It is a very old house that feels very cosy. It has an amazing beautiful garden and a rooftop terrace from where you can see the sea.
Also the location is very good as it is right in the centre of La Orotava (at least it feels that way). Mercadona (big supermarket) is only 3 mins away and you also have two gardens next to it.
In the hostel you have tables and office chairs on mass. I had a private room both times with a table and chair in my own room. I don’t have just a laptop but a big computer and two monitors. But here I was able to work with it without a problem.
Ingolf the owner was very nice to help me setup a internet cable for my computer as I can’t use WiFi. And also the second time I was helped to get a internet cable into my room.

The house is very beautiful decorated, everything you need to live is there! Love the garden and roof terrace as well! The community is less organized.. so if you're looking for more independent stay, this will fit.

Gato Coliving is really charming, the house is very confortable and the spaces of working are good and with a lot of ligth.
Is very well located with a Mercadona just 3 minutes away.
Theres a sauna in the house (with an extra payment but still cheap if you share) and is really awesome to have the option of organizing a sauna night.
A very clean coliving and a very well equiped kitchen.
Bad things for me are the following:
-There are not female shared rooms and not all the guests are digital nomads, so if you shared the room maybe you will share with travelers/tourists and theres a risk you cannot sleep well, avoid sharing room in any case.
-Breakfast is only cereals, should be good have at least yoghurt or fruit to put the cereals there.
-In winter the house is very cold.
-You have to paid extra for almost everything like the screen in the coworking or even if you ask for a mouse in case you forgot it fo example.
-It will be nice to have more activities organized by the coliving and not by ourselves, yoga clases or monday dinners never ocurred during my stay.

Coliving and Coworking with a lot of charm!
Magical house with a lot of details in the beautiful historical part of La Orotava. 2X fully equipped kitchen, high quality bed, different spaces to work, lush garden (we could grab fresh citrus fruites directly from the trees), great rooftop with a stunning 360° view to the mountains, the iconic Orotava Valley and the coast (where the sun sets).
Thanks to the very helpful and constructive owner family.

Vielen Dank.

Gato Azul is a place where you will feel right at home.
You can find everything you need to work or just to relax..like the beautiful roof terrace. Whether indoors or outdoors, the house offers plenty of space to work or spend evenings together having dinner outside.
The hosts are very friendly, helpful and available for any questions you may have. They will also give you the best local advice to explore this beautiful island. A great coliving and coworking space for digital nomads in search of nature and adventures!

In short; we spent 2 weeks here and don’t recommend. It’s overpriced and the website is pure false advertising.
Long story; extremely overpriced crowded house. As the other reviewer stated extremely noisy. Our room was close to the kitchen which ment loud music a lot of the time and little sleep. If there is no music it’s just incredible loud. Had no to little rest time. The website is 100% false advertising, it doesn’t look like that. Sauna was 'broken' but no attempts were made to fix it. Basic breakfast is taken literally; cheapest lidl cereals and Nutella. I think in general you feel that this co-living is not setup to create a nice experience for digital nomads but to make (a lot of) money. It is about 30% more expensive than other co-livings in the surrounding. Some of those have pools and jaccuzi's. You have to pay to do your laundry which also seems a bit off. The workplaces are crowded and feel crammed, which ment often you have to work next to the kitchen which makes concentrating hard. Two space to do private calls which are of course almost always taken. Desks in rooms are to small to set up ergonomic workspace. Ended up working from bed a lot. No yoga was done during our stay. If it would be 50% of the pricing it would’ve made sense, this was an overpriced hostel disguised as a co-living.

The biggest problem I had with Gato Azul is a lack of communal space, which should be a core part of any thing that calls itself a coliving space. Apart from a little corner in one of the kitchens, there is no space where you can just sit down and relax.
The coworking part is not much better. There is one room where you're supposed to work, but it has space for 6 people and its full most of the time, so you end up working from your room. The other small "meeting room" has no internet connectivity. I didn't manage to have a simple voice call inside.
When me and my girlfriend had calls at the same time, one of us had to go to the bathroom (not kidding) in order to continue the call, because there was no other silent space in the whole house.
The house on its own is really beautiful, but it doesn't help because the walls are so thin and you can hear every single thing in the house and need headphones just to fall asleep.
It almost seems like the owners jumped on the after covid bandwagon and renamed a hostel into a coliving/coworking space.

I spent a week here in January 2023 at Gato Azul Coliving and unfortunately have to draw a negative conclusion.
Gato Azul is a beautiful and newly renovated old house (300 years old) with two floors, a garden and a roof terrace. Architecturally, it is a real jewel with a lot of charm and unique design.
So what's the problem?
It's a fancy, expensive hostel and currently the noisiest accommodation I have ever stayed in as a frequent traveller.
You have no privacy whatsoever. Sleeping through the night for 7-8 hours is not possible according to individual needs. This is not the fault of the guests, but the house is old and you can hear every step and every conversation above whispering volume, even if you are in your room with the door closed.
The house currently accommodates consistently too many people. According to the website, 10 rooms for a total of 20 people. This is far too much. People jostle each other in the morning and evening in the narrow corridors, on the stairs and especially in the kitchen. In addition, with full occupancy, 6-8 people also have to share a nice but tiny bathroom.
For introverts who also need a quiet retreat from time to time, this must be an absolute nightmare.
The three rooms in the middle of the second floor have no real fresh air supply and lead to the corridor, where there is constant activity. If you live on the ground floor, you also have to deal with the trampling from the second floor.
There are currently no proper social areas within the house. You don't have any places to retreat or things to do. No cosy place to read, lie around, do yoga or sports.
There is a single workroom with 6 seats, but you are not allowed to do video meetings in it because people have to work here in a focused way. The rest have to find their own places, but there aren't really any other places for concentrated work.
Video meetings can be done in your room, as long as you are not accommodated in the three middle and tiny rooms on the 2nd floor.
There is also a call room without fresh air for 1-2 people. But this is usually occupied and stuffy after 10 minutes.
The website is false advertising. The content does not match reality. The breakfast is bread and muesli, the tap water smells strange, you can't relax in the garden because there are only uncomfortable chairs and no sunbeds. Don't go by the pictures. And above all, you usually buy a pig in a poke when it comes to the rooms.
The organisation of private activities is also not easily accessible (only Slack) and conceptless in the time I was there. There were no outdoor activities. The Monday dinner has been cancelled for several weeks without replacement. Most things take place indoors instead of outside activities. The kitchens are well stocked, but far too small and not usable at busy or peak times.
Costs: Gato Azul is expensive compared to other providers and despite the lack of service, sauna costs 20 EUR (which is not great either), even washing and drying clothes costs extra money. I can't understand the extra costs for coliving. After all, you live and work there.
Gato Azul still seems to be in the process of finding a place (as of January 2023), but it is still far from being able to offer a good coliving concept. The price-performance ratio is unacceptable, even if the house has been lovingly restored.
I had to move out in between because it was unbearable. I gave direct, concrete and constructive feedback on the spot. Nevertheless, I had to pay the full price. I understand the economic aspect behind it, but it is not supposed to be a hotel where you can go out during the day, but above all a place for people who want to work and socialise from Tenerife.
I wish the owner and the staff all the best and much success in getting on the right track, where the needs of working travellers are understood and implemented.
As long as this is not solved, I will not book here again. And the other guests I spent time with here feel the same way. It was a very stressful experience.

Wanted to try this place and was told that they do pure coworking and had availability during my dates of stay but when I arrived in town I was ignored and then told abruptly that they would only provide coworking if I also rented a room with them (after I had already rented other accommodations). If they didn’t want business that’s okay but I found it actually quite rude. Unfortunate experience.

I stayed at this place for 10 days, and couldn't have made a better choice. the owners do anything to make your stay a remarkable experience. Your can stay on the sunny roof terrace, work from there, grap an orange in the garden backdoor and make yourself fresh orange juice, work in one of the super nice co-working areas with it's awesome and comfy desk chairs, get a screen... everything is there. even the matraces and pillows are more comfortable than the ones I had at home and ensured truly relaxing nights.
The ancient house is clean and newly renovated. At some point they will even have a sauna and pool...
with busses you easily get around the area, but Orotava on it's own offers a lot of nice cafés and restaurants that invite you to relax... you will not regret your choice :)
