Here are some made up facts you’ve probably heard before: 🤔 High tide is for beginners 🧐 High tide always has soft breaking waves 🤨 Low tide is always shallow - experts only! The truth? Every surf spot is different, and tides can completely change how a wave behaves. Today we’re showing you how to read tides and make smarter decisions — so every surf session counts. We’re just scratching the surface of this surprisingly complex (but super rewarding) topic. Start reading the tides and watch your sessions improve before you even paddle out! 🌊 #surftips #surfcoaching #learntosurf #surflessons #surftraining

We had the most amazing two-week stay at Salty Jackal. We joined the surf camp during the first week which was one of the most incredible experiences. Surfing in Namibia is a very special experience. Our surf instructor, Etienne, was a great teacher! Very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and keen to help us improve. Vitto, Marsha and the volunteers were all wonderful - so helpful and welcoming. We had so much fun exploring the area and there was loads to do. We were very sad when we had to leave and even extended our stay for an extra week.

We contacted Salty Jackal for a surf class as we had spare time left and wanted to try out the Swakupmond coastline. As we are both not advanced surfers they took us to a place with manageable waves. Really recommend to try surfing with them as most people don't think of it being a surf location but it definitely is! 🌊

Stayed here for a week-long surf camp in March and loved it. Really friendly people, well organised (but laidback), everything was arranged for me. Surf instructing was really excellent (I've had a few different instructors over the years–this was one of the best), and I felt like I progressed quite a lot which was really satisfying. Compared to other places I've surfed (Brazil, Peru, UK), the line-ups were basically empty and what locals there were were super friendly. Outside of surfing Swakopmund is a nice, chilled, safe and slightly eccentric town with a lot of nice places to eat and hang out. Special mention goes to all the staff but particularly Wencke on the front desk who managed to courier me the shirts I left in my room all the way back to London – and they arrived!

Had a lovely 2 night stay here on the halfway point of our Namibia trip in September 2025. The staff were all so great and friendly. We were immediately very comfortable. Booked our ATV and sandboarding in the desert through the hostel. Had a private 2 person surf lesson with Griff which was great.

The hostel has a great vide, near the center, very good free breakfast with coffee and tea all day long. They also do a daily activity with the guests such as watch sunset of movie night which is nice. Totally recommend!!!

★☆☆☆☆

I am only commenting on the surf school, not the hostel. Overall really bad experience. Poor service despite a super high price. I wanted to reschedule a session (after having paid for many sessions already) and there was 0 flexibility and not even a call back - they just pocked the money. Feels like a rip off and not a surf camp

I was really looking forward to this stay, but it ended up being a bit below my expectations. So it was okay, ended up leaving earlier than I supposed to! The room was okay; a bit smelly at first, but not too bad. Needed to pay more for laundry + towel & their online payment charged me 10% more (eg. 400NAD more which quite a lot) due to the conversion/bank/whatever (which something that we can't do anything about it). But would be great if the hostel actually have a card reader/slider. I really appreciated that they had a heater though, since it was freezing! The staff were helpful, but I didn’t quite feel the warm, friendly vibe I usually experience at other hostels (from both the team and fellow travelers). Having traveled across other African countries, I’ve experienced incredible hospitality, so I guess that’s why this stay felt a little underwhelming in comparison.
